FS: Longines Vintage Ultra Chron Super Compressor

We are proud to present this all-original and well preserved Super Compressor diver's watch by Longines: The Ultra Chron reference 8221-2.

In 1967, and to celebrate the brand's first centennial movement, Longines unveiled its first high-beat caliber 431, dubbed “Ultra Chronometer” or Ultra-Chron for short. It was meant to keep time with an impressive maximum deviation of one minute per month ie two seconds per day.

As seen on this example, Longines also fitted the successor of said caliber inside an EPSA case, which was meant to be the company's top-of-the-line offering for underwater activities. As a dive watch, this timepiece offers important features such as an inner rotating bezel and a striking minute hand.

All in all, it's a cool diver in great condition that truly embodies the golden era of dive watches of the 1960s and 1970s.

Please read the condition report carefully and refer to the high resolution pictures to help you assess the overall condition of the watch.

MODEL / REFERENCE: Longines Ultra Chron Super Compressor. Reference 8221-2. The movement serial number 51'603'xxx dates this Super Compressor to 1972.

DIAL+ HANDS: The anthracite grained dial has aged honestly but remains flawless with a sharp and complete printing.

This dial displays a date window with a clean disc between 4 and 5 o'clock. The Ultra-Chron logo, as well as the Longines winged hourglass are applied.

The raised cardinal hour markers are accounted for, and each one is dissected by a beautifully aged, intact Tritium inlay that turned into a warm vanilla hue.

This correct handset features a large and bright orange minute hand that stands out for extra visibility. The luminous tips display intact rectangular inlays.

The bi-directional bezel is adorned with faded orange accents and a luminous dot at 12 o'clock.

CRYSTAL: The domed mineral crystal, armed with a tension ring is correct to the watch and displays scratches that could be polished off.

CASE: The two-body, stainless steel case uses the Super Compressor technology by EPSA. Its cushion shape boasts substantial dimensions of 43mm in diameter and 44mm from lug to lug.

Longines applied a combination of satin and polished finishes to the case surface that shows some things and scratches throughout, yet it's still preserved in an honest and original/unpolished condition.

CASEBACK: The stainless steel screw down caseback has six opening notches and very minor scratches from previous opening attempts. Just like the case, the original satin finish can be seen unaltered for almost half a century.

The inner side is marked with the correct stamps for the period, from the signature EPSA hallmark to the Omega nomenclature and the case's reference number.

MOVEMENT: The movement is Longines's own high beat caliber 6651 with 25 Jewels and a semi quickset date function. The in-house caliber 6651 is a Cal. 431 that's been modified to run at 28,800 bph instead of the original 36,000 bph As expected, the movement is recently serviced thus it winds smoothly, runs well and keeps good time.

CROWN: The dual crowns are embossed with the brand's name at the center and operate as it should, from rotating the inner bezel, to winding and time setting.

BRACELET: The 22mm, stainless steel bracelet comes in full length with a signed buckle and displays wear marks consistent with its use and age.

ACCESSORIES: Original Longines presentation box and booklet. The extract of the Longines archives has been ordered and should be available soon.

The Longines Ultra-Chron diver is definitely an interesting watch to consider. Its high-beat movement and ultra-chronometer certification, earned it an increasing desirability. Today, the number of these watches is getting scarcer, making them particularly interesting to collect.

WARRANTY: We guarantee the authenticity of the watch. We also provide 12 months guarantee for the correct function of this timepiece. All guarantees are subject to the General Terms and Conditions.

The price is 2600 CHF Plus Shipping (Swiss Franc) or best reasonable offer plus shipping at actual cost. Low ball offers will be politely ignored.
