I’ve decided to offer this rare bird Abercrombie and Fitch Solunar looking for a new home. This watch needs no introduction if you are familiar with it. And if you are knowledgeable on these, you know that finding one is hard enough….finding one with a nice looking, undamaged, and fully original dial is nearly impossible. Well here it is…all of the above. I’ve looked at a few of these over the years and this is by far the nicest I’ve seen. The egg shell colored dial is flawless and the colorful subdial, unique to these Solunars, is a sight to see. The watch is in working condition although I have no service history and it has not been serviced while in my possession. I’ve worn it a few times and it keeps decent time. The colorful subdial was designed to appeal to outdoorsman and fisherman and was used to keep track of the tide. There were several dial variations over the years and I believe this is the very first version Circa 1950. If you think of Abercrombie as a youthful clothing company, do some research. They were the L.L. Bean of the 1950s and were way ahead of the outdoorsman and camping craze of today. It measures a full size 36mm without crown x 44mm lug to lug, a decent size for early 50s. The case appears unpolished with sharp edges. Some light scratching to caseback as would be expected. I believe the plastic crystal has been replaced and is in great shape (to my knowledge this is the only thing that has been replaced). Movement is clean and original with no sign of damage. You will notice the lume in the hour hand has fallen out over the years but not really a distraction. Excuse my poor photography, any shadowing on the dial is just shadows, trust me , the dial is perfect!
When this model occasionally comes up for sale, it’s usually in the $10K price range, and that’s typically with a dial with at least some flaws as these were typically worked hard by outdoorsman as mentioned earlier and frequently exposed to water. I can’t emphasize enough how special it is to find this one with a pristine dial. I’m looking for $8995 but will consider a close offer from serious buyer. Payment forms would be Zelle, bank wire, or PayPal with fees split between buyer/seller. I would welcome a phone/FaceTime/Zoom chat with any potential buyer and may request references from you. I don’t sell a watch very often but can provide a few references for you as well, and also have 100% eBay feedback over 22 years. Scammers, please don’t waste my time or yours, I’ve heard them all. Watch will not be shipped until funds have fully cleared. I would prefer a US buyer but willing to consider other scenarios for serious buyer. Please email for more photos.
