Rules: Postings must be an ad announcing an intent to sell, buy or trade. Full item description and photo(s) must be posted within the message here, not as links to other websites. Links to online auctions and other sites: Links to online auctions, dealer sites or other listings of items are permitted, but you should be careful to ensure that such listings will comply with our other ChronoTrader Policies. Commercial dealers are limited to three unique posts per day. [More...]
For sale is a particularly interesting and uncommon Swiss horological school watch from the École Professionnelle de Tramelan, dating approximately to the mid-20th century.
The watch is signed on the dial:
ÉCOLE PROFESSIONNELLE
TRAMELAN
CHRONOMÈTRE
This is a genuine montre-école / pièce école, a school watch associated with the Swiss tradition of horological education.
What makes this particular example especially interesting is the movement:
MOVEMENT
IWC Calibre 88
Manual winding
Movement marking: 591
The IWC movement is clean and attractive and is one of the main reasons I consider this an important example for a collector of Swiss horological history.
DIAL
Beautiful silver dial with applied faceted hour markers, elegant hands and subsidiary seconds at 6 o'clock.
The dial retains its original-looking ÉCOLE PROFESSIONNELLE TRAMELAN CHRONOMÈTRE signature.
The CHRONOMÈTRE designation is particularly interesting. I have not found surviving documentation establishing an official chronometer certification for this individual watch, so I am making no such claim, only documenting what is actually present on the dial.
CASE
Stainless steel case.
Inside the case is marked:
ACIER INOXYDABLE
Case number:
1257
Approximately 34 mm diameter excluding the crown.
The case retains a very attractive mid-century appearance with normal signs of age and previous handling.
CONDITION
Very good vintage condition.
The dial is particularly well preserved and attractive, with clean applied markers and hands. The case has some normal vintage wear but presents very nicely overall.
The photographs show the actual watch being offered and are part of the description.
WHY THIS WATCH IS INTERESTING
École Professionnelle Tramelan school watches are unusual pieces of Swiss horological history and are known to collectors interested in montres-écoles, independent watchmaking and the history of Swiss horological education.
Documented examples of École Professionnelle Tramelan watches have appeared in specialist international auction catalogues.
This example is particularly appealing because of the combination of:
• École Professionnelle Tramelan dial
• CHRONOMÈTRE designation
• IWC Calibre 88 movement
• Movement marking 591
• Stainless-steel case
• Case number 1257
• Approximately 34 mm diameter
• Attractive original vintage character
I have deliberately avoided making unsupported claims about the meaning of numbers 591 and 1257 or about the identity of the original student/watchmaker. These are interesting areas for further research.
For the right collector, this is much more than simply an anonymous vintage Swiss wristwatch, it is an unusual piece connected to the Swiss horological school tradition, with the added interest of an IWC movement.
