For sale is one of the few magnificant Benrus Skychief chronographs from the early 1950′s. It has the Benrus GH4 Chronograph movement and ging on the dial to show for it. The GH4 is actually a rare Valjoux 71. It is just serviced and performing perfectly. The hands on this beauty are blued steel with a very destinctive red chronograph centre hand. The so important bezel on this Benrus Skychief is in all orginal condition with the small triangle on it. It turns both way like it should. The beautiful case is all stainless steel and measures 38mm in diameter. It comes on a near new leather nato strapt that underlines the vintage look of this great triple register handwind chronograph.
There is much resemblence with the early Breitling Navitimer, because they were developed in the same period (the early 1940′s) with the same purpose. Assisting pilots that is. Breitling of Switzerland recevied a special order to do so from the American Aircraft Owners and Pilosts Assosiastion (AOPA). Benrus (of America (New York actually) was a brand that allready in 1929 became the official watch for the U.S. mail-carrying pilots of two major cargo airways. In 1940, Benrus launched the Sky Chief and started referring to itself as the “Official Watch of Famous Airlines”. Among the airlines for which Benrus eventually would serve as the official pilot timepiece were Delta, KLM, NWA, and TWA.
