Up for sale is this genuine vintage circa 1960s Eterna-Matic KonTiki 20 featuring an amazingly aged Tropical dial with incredible bronze patina. The KonTiki 20 is a classic, rugged water resistant watch with heavy screw-back steel case, screw down crown and quality shock resistant ETA movement modified by Eterna with their patented 5-ball bearing rotor mount. These watches are terrific value for money and this one is extra special with its remarkable and attractively aged bronze dial with exotic red accent. This KonTiki 20 is in overall Very Good vintage condition and you'd be hard pressed to find a cooler looking dial -- pure vintage magic on the wrist!

CASE & BACK: Nicely sized 36mm (not including crown) x 44mm x 12mm contoured-lug case in Good to Very Good original vintage condition with well-defined bevels. The watch was certainly worn regularly and with gusto, which stands to reason based on the sun blasted condition of the dial. There are numerous scuffs, marks and some nicks especially to the sides. Screw in water-resistant caseback has some superficial scratches/tool marks and smoothing of the gold KonTiki raft logo so cosmetically Very Good+ condition. Inner case & back are corrosion free and all correct Eterna nomenclature of the period is present.

DIAL & HANDS: Excellent condition and all-original "exotic" KonTinki dial with red-highlighted minute track that has been bleached by the sun and time to an extraordinary bronze tone. Likely the dial started out as black like the background of the date window but some 50+ years on it has turned into a one-of-a-kind wabisabi beauty, changing tone from bright to dark brown in different light and the angle of a wrist. The white text is sharp and the applied ridged silver markers are super cool with a sort of butterscotch inlay. All original luminous dots are present, as are the Eterna-Matic "five-ball" logo and framed date window. The dial shows a few very small marks to its finish but is nonetheless stunning and needless to say quite uncommon with this sort of even patina. Original luminous and white enamel-filled hour & minute hands are Near Mint with all lume intact, and the baton sweep seconds hand is likewise Near Mint. This dial is the definition of Tropical!

CROWN: Original oversize and correct unsigned crown screws down and pulls out to the winding and non-hack time setting positions as it should. It does have a slight wiggle to it but having owned several vintage KonTikis now I actually believe this to be a result of Eterna's spring-loaded crown design rather than a defect and probably also to aid with the pull out-style quickset date.

CRYSTAL: Tall domed acrylic crystal has no logo so perhaps generic or pre-dating that feature. It shows some some light scratches but is clear and chip free--Excellent condition.

MOVEMENT: Eterna-Matic caliber 1489K, which I believe is a modified ETA cal. 2433 with the unique ball bearing rotor system and Kif-Ultraflex shock protection added. It is non-hacking and also surprisingly has a quickset function via pulling the crown out past the time-setting position -- hadn't realized that before! While I do not know the service history of this watch, the movement is keeping very good time with strong power reserve and correct date change. I obviously guarantee this to be the case upon shipment.

BAND: This great KonTiki 20 comes on a nearly new 2-piece kakhi NATO-style strap with polished steel hardware. This watch has a 18mm lug width.
