Update: Fixed pin removal

I have a military style watch with fixed pins. Do these have to be drilled out? Alternatively is there such a thing as an open ended steel strap/band? Thanks. Fixed pins are sometimes affixed to a watch for the simple reason that spring bars are mechanical devices and hence subject to failure... |
A "Chuck's tip" for Collectors: Spring Bars...:
The thinking is that if a spring bar fails on a watch with a traditional two piece strap, or a bracelet, you typically will lose the watch off of your wrist, and if you're on a motorcycle or underwater the chances are that you've lost the watch, for good.
With fixed bars the chances of a spring bar failing are nil.
As a result you will either have to have the fixed bars removed and some semblence of holes [indentations] for spring bars to be used in their place. I've never owned a fixed bar watch so I can't advise you on that point.
However, there are strap options you can use with that style of pins:
If you go to Ron Sabo's International Watchman site you'll find a wide variety of options: |
Those are just some of the open ended styles he stocks.
Ron is a good guy to do business with, his prices are downright CHEAP [but his products aren't] the only "Gotcha" is that he has a $45-50 minumum order, but if you buy some straps, a tool or two and a spring bar assortment... |
[This spring bar assortment is only $15 and a must have for any watch collector...]
... It's pretty easy to get up to the minimum order.
So make yourself a list and give Ron a call. He takes Visa and Master Card [I'm not sure about AMEX or Discover, etc.] and he'll get you set up!
