Laurent Ferrier Galet Micro-Rotor Montre Ecole Vertical Satin Brushed Stainless Steel Case
Besides vintage at WRIST ICONS we also love independent brands. We are proud to offer a beautiful piece from Laurent Ferrier, an iconic watchmaker who combines classic Geneva watchmaking with an avant garde design. This particular Laurent Ferrier Galet Micro-Rotor Montre Ecole combines vintage style with the best of refined movements from Switzerland.
What is this model:
The case of this watch has a rather vintage design, the “Montre Ecole“. This Galet Micro-Rotor Montre Ecole can be seen as a pocket watch to be worn on the wrist, something to recall early wristwatches from the end of the 19th / beginning of the 20th century, when pocket watches were transformed into wrist timepieces, by adding lugs to a perfectly round case. And with the Montre Ecole, you can identify this at a glance.
The 40mm watch features a three piece basinné case that is formed by two satin bands, matte finished on one, polished on the other. The watch is very round, and the lugs are straight and thin while the "pastille" end-pieces are echoed by the crown.
This new case demanded a new dial, also inspired by the Laurent Ferrier School Piece “Montre Ecole” with a vertical satin-brushed finish in slate grey.
The dial is finished with Assegai-shaped white gold hands and indexes point to anthracite painted indexes. The small seconds dial, has the same anthracite painted indexes
History of the brand Laurent Ferrier
Laurent Ferrier is one the independent watchmakers who sets the bar in independent watchmaker. How many watchmakers have been working 38-years with Patek Philippe, finished 3 overall at le Mans and started their own brand.? No one else than Laurent Ferrier.
Lauren Ferrier started his own company in 2008. One of his best friends helped him building his own brand. It was his co race driver. François Servanin, an industrialist and racing driver himself.
In the 1970s, Laurent Ferrier was diverted from watch calibres by his love for roaring engines and gleaming bodywork. And when the perfectionist mind of a watchmaker meets the automobile world, results are sure to follow! He drove racing cars on some of the most prestigious tracks and took part seven times in the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours race – taking first place in the 2-litre prototype category in 1977. That was where he met François Servanin, an industrialist and racing driver himself.
Their shared passion for mechanics and speed cemented their friendship, and in 1979 they came 3rd in the overall rankings of the Le Mans 24 Hours at the wheel of a Porsche 935T from the Kremer racing team. A performance all the more remarkable in that their competitors were professional F1 drivers! This competitive spirit was to lead them to the Laurent Ferrier watchmaking venture that began in 2008.
Introduction of the micro roto movement
Representing a subtle blend of traditions and contemporary techniques, the MONTR ECOLE Micro-Rotor features an understated dial concealing a concentrated blend of horological innovations.
Its calibre is automatically wound by an off-centred Micro-Rotor which is suspended between two bridges that allows for excellent viewing of the entire movement. The 22k guiloche rotor is held in place by two jewels to keep it as stable as possible. And then there's the escapement. The Laurent Ferrier Micro-Rotor doesn't use a traditional Swiss lever escapement. It uses a completely lubricant-free natural escapement, based on a concept from Mr. Abraham-Louis Breguet. This new double direct-impulse escapement fitted directly on the balance is equipped with a silicon lever. This modern construction, combined with the use of cutting-edge materials, maximizes energy efficiency, which in turn ensures high amplitude for the balance and reduces the mechanical force required to wind the mainspring.
The harmonious construction and the technical performances of the Galet Micro-Rotor are part of a global approach envisaged for each of the movement parts, aimed at optimizing energy management – the ultimate goal being to improve user friendliness by more efficient automatic winding of the movement.
Another nod to classicism is the finish of the main bridge of the FBN Calibre 229.01 movement and is a sight to behold and displays meticulous microbillé finishing, mirror polishing, and material contrast that’s just as strong as what you see in the case finishing. Laurent Ferrier also choose a guiloche decoration for its Micro-Rotor movement. Further hand-finishing skills applied to the movement include shot-blasting, known as microbillé, and mirror polishing for the parts in steel, including the balance cock.
The movement gives a nod to classicism all parts are really well finished to the highest standard of Swiss watchmaking:
-Bridges are finished with Côtes de Genève stripes
-Mainplate is finished with circular graining
-Edges of bridges are beveled
-Wheel spokes are beveled
-Screw heads are polished
-Interior angles of the balance cock are beveled and polished
-Steel parts (cock bridge, rotor bridge) are mirror polished
-Micro-rotor is guilloche
