FS: 1988 Rolex Submariner (Ref.168000) "Tripple Zero" Transitional Model

Offered at $7,000 USD We are always open to offers and trades. Please feel free to contact us at cam@craftandtailored.com or by calling (213) 293-0555

This specific model is considered to be a very rare variant of the Rolex Ref.16800 model due to a very short period of production and simple but substantial improvements. Hence the extra "0" Rolex added to differentiate this short-lived reference. The main difference would be the improvement in the quality of the stainless steel, which was upgraded from grade 316L to grade 904L. After only about 9 months of production 168000 was replaced with 16610 which was much the same watch but with the new 3135 movements.

This specific example would make a great addition to any rare vintage collection for the man who appreciates the elements of the vintage patina of a previously glossy dial that turned matte. These Submariners include a sapphire crystal and the water resistance of a trip-lock crown. These transitional models like the one we are featuring here are becoming increasingly harder and harder to find due to the limited production numbers of these rare transitional examples.

CASE & BRACELET

The case of this 1988 Ref.168000 is very sharp with only very minor polishing. The original 93150 oyster bracelet retains all of its original links and shows very minimal stretch and included are the original 593 end links. The original insert retains its tritium pearl and is in great original condition. The case has a light engraving on the back as seen in the pictures.

DIAL & HANDS

The stunning and rare transitional gloss dial that has taken on a matte look as a result of oxidation which is common in the triple zero references. The dial has taken on a subtle but respectable patina and the tritium lume plots are free of any lume degradation. The lume has taken on a wonderful cream like patina and the lume plots match the hands perfectly. The hour hand does have some cracking but remains intact as seen in photos.
