Up for sale is a vintage 1960s Hamilton Odyssee 2001 automatic watch.
As long as Hamilton has been around, they've pushed the envelope of design. Starting in the 1950s, they released a line of futuristic, asymmetrical designs. These funky watches caught the eye of none other than Stanley Kubrick, who thought Hamilton would be a great candidate to design the watch of the future for his upcoming film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
For the movie, Hamilton designed a futuristic cuff-style wristwatch with GMT and alarm functions. But an exact replica proved too expensive to manufacture at scale. So Hamilton drew from the design to create a simpler (but equally funky) model.
They dubbed it the Odyssee 2001 (using the French spelling to skirt copyright laws). It hit the market in 1969, as a tie-in to the film, and consumers ate it up. In fact, Hamilton couldn't keep up with demand, and soon released a second variant, which was available in stores in 1970.
While the first variant had circular hour markers and triangular hands, the second variant has applied indices and luminous stick hands. It's this variant, which was released until 1973, that would become the most familiar to collectors.
Every part of this Odyssee 2001 oozes retro-futuristic cool, beginning with the large polished stainless steel case. The case is actually thicker at the top, causing it to tilt ever so slightly towards you as it sits on the wrist. The dial features large applied hour markers in an oblong black chapter ring, a porthole date window at 6:00, and slender stick hands.
If you're looking for a truly unique blast from the past, the Odyssee 2001 is in a class of its own.
