[from hodinkee] The Carrera name goes back to the Carrera Panamericana, a legendary (and frequently deadly) car race through Mexico. The Heuer connection can be traced back to March 1962, with Jack Heuer attending the 12 Hours of Sebring race in Florida. Jack had just recently taken the reins of the company after buying out his uncle, who wanted to leave the business. Jack had been invited to Sebring by the Sports Car Club of America in appreciation of Heuer lending stopwatches and timing devices to serve as the timekeepers of the race.

This Carrera had the same two register Valjoux 92 movement and black dial, but had an original 1/5 second track and had regular-sized chronograph pushers. This MG had another mysterious name printed at the dial, but it wasn’t the E.W. Gonzalez. The name was Roger Brady. Was it another unsolvable mystery? In fact, no it wasn’t. After a few seconds of searching, I came across the PDF of the British Motoring Summer 1997 issue that had an interesting profile of J.S. Inskip, Inc., a distributor of British luxury and sports cars (including MG, Austin-Healey, Riley, Morris, Aston Martin, Rolls-Royce, and Bentley) in New York. On page 7, the article states that a person named Roger Brady was head of the Overseas Delivery Department. Coincidence? I think not.

The Vulcain chrono that we feature here utilizes the Valjoux 7733, the same movement that powered early versions of the Heuer Carrera. The crowning feature of this chrono is without question its dial, an unusual surfboard design with a funky accent in the center, reminiscent of a radio cabinet from the 1960s. Housed in an a 36.5mm case and fitted with barrel pushers, the result is a visually-arresting watch, sporty and sharp-- which will make a perfect companion for fans of exotic dial designs and racing spirit.
