A forum for identifying and avoiding wholly or partially non-authentic wristwatches --
including counterfeit, replica, Frankenwatches and other fake or bastardized pieces.
Our objective here is to DISCOURAGE the sales and purchase of counterfeit
wristwatch and jewelry products. It is also for helping people identify
watches that are mostly authentic, but have been: altered for personal customization,
repaired with inappropriate parts or modified to be passed off as more valuable pieces.
Including a photo of the piece you are talking about ALWAYS helps! You can learn how to post a photo here: How To Include Photos In Your Postings. 'For sale' postings, commercial solicitation and ads are not allowed. Links to Internet auctions are acceptable only if their purpose is to question the authenticity of a product or provide new clues for identifying counterfeit products. Links that appear to be 'shills' promoting the sale of counterfeit products will be deleted. Links to websites of sellers of counterfeit items are not permitted -- we know they are out there and do not need to be encouraging them by sending traffic to their sites. Just noticed this post, so I'm not sure if it's timely.
Last Omega serial number I confirmed was just before Christmas. Both via eMail to Bienne (OEM) and call to the Service Center in Secaucus, NO PROBLEM GETTING CONFIRMATION. Took over a week, as I recall, from Switzerland; and, in the case of Secaucus, if I encountered reluctance from person answering phone (too busy to get into system), I just called back.
FYI, my approach has been to only generally describe the watch, eg, "Seamaster," and when they response, look to see if the photo, description, et cetera, which is more detailed, matches what is being sold.
In terms of the logic of not giving out serial number data, it's my understanding that the very process of engraving a number on the case lug is hte issue - even if you had "a number." Witness the much larger, easier to engrage series numbers on the Bond LE 2537.80, and how often those are screwed up, and you can imagine what a challenge it would be to put a serial number (much finer laser work) on the case.
