: I'm looking at an Omega Seamaster on a well
: known auction site that I'm a bit confused
: about - the pictures are below. The serial
: number ties in with being produced in 1944,
: but I thought the Seamaster range only began
: in 1948. Do you think this watch is
: legitimate?
: Many thanks for any help you can give me.
It is certainly not a Seamaster. More likely it is a redial or a combination of parts from different watches. For example, I would be the hands are not original. I did some research on the Omega site for you. The reference number on the inside case back indicates that the watch is (or at least the back of the case is from) a relatively rare "Suveran" that was only commercialized in Sweden. The Suveran was later renamed the "260." The movement should be a 30T2 (looks like one to but please don't rely on me identify it from the pic), which is a relatively well-known movement that does have value to collectors.
The ironic thing about this is the possibility that someone, in trying to pass the watch off as a Seamaster, actually ruined something that may have been more valuable.
