Counterfeit Watchers Discussion Forum

A forum for identifying and avoiding wholly or partially non-authentic wristwatches -- including counterfeit, replica, Frankenwatches and other fake or bastardized pieces. Our objective here is to DISCOURAGE the sales and purchase of counterfeit wristwatch and jewelry products. It is also for helping people identify watches that are mostly authentic, but have been: altered for personal customization, repaired with inappropriate parts or modified to be passed off as more valuable pieces.

Including a photo of the piece you are talking about ALWAYS helps! You can learn how to post a photo here: How To Include Photos In Your Postings. 'For sale' postings, commercial solicitation and ads are not allowed. Links to Internet auctions are acceptable only if their purpose is to question the authenticity of a product or provide new clues for identifying counterfeit products. Links that appear to be 'shills' promoting the sale of counterfeit products will be deleted. Links to websites of sellers of counterfeit items are not permitted -- we know they are out there and do not need to be encouraging them by sending traffic to their sites. Privacy, additional policies and administrivia are covered in the Terms of Use.

Re: Counterfeit using original Omega parts?

I have read this thread with interest. Last year (without any real knowledge in this area)I bought an attractive and immaculate vintage Omega watch with a 1960s Cal 601 movement. It had obviously (as I found out later) had a refurbished dial and it is not the same as it was originally. From my research, its dial was repainted (very professionally, I think) in an Omega military style - it was originally a civilian Seamaster of some sort.

So, I guess it by no means a genuine original now that the dial has been repainted (or perhaps even replaced). Yet it is 'all Omega' in its movement, crown etc. Overall I'm happy, its movement is very accurate despite being over 36 years old (according to Omega), and it looks very very nice with a crisp vintage style. It also cost very little - perhaps 1/10th of the price of the cheapest new Omega so I can wear it all the time without worry of damage.

However, (when I read these boards!) I sometimes feel bad about it -- "its not 100% geniune", "Its not real" etc.... yet it was not passed off as a very valuable piece so I don't feel ripped off.

What are your views? I am committing a massive sin in liking this watch or is its new dial just part of the character of the thing?

Rgds.
