It's difficult to explain. The Autavia bezel is two high quality machined pieces that are fitted together. My Omegas are one high quality machined piece and one metalized (read: lower quality) insert. Some Omega bezel inserts are plastic too, making them even lower quality and much less durable.
When I inspected the Autavia bezel from the top, it appeared to be a simple metal insert (metal label, if you will) that sat in a groove. When I took the bezel off, I discovered that the insert was not a simple label but a relatively compicated, machined piece that was pressed into the outer bezel. It is about 2.5mm thick, stepped, coned, and pvd coated. OUCH.
I was planning on having a 1mm thick metalized label made but that idea is out the window.
My latest thoughts are to remove the outer pvd coating (mine is practically gone anyway) and attach a .2mm thick metalized label. This is slightly thicker than the original pvd coating. Unfotunately, it will not pass as original under medium scrutiny (4X glasses). I was hoping for high scrutiny (10X loupe). ;-)
