The Indy 500 will be run today, even though there will be no fans in attendance, so it seemed like the right time to post some additional photos of this one. These watches were ordered specially for the Speedway and are unique from any other Autavias from the 1960s, with the silver / white dial. Rather than simply putting the "Wings and Wheel" logo on an ordinary watch in the catalog, Heuer made a special watch for this order . . . a silver / white dial in a second execution Autavia screw-back case.
This watch was at the race in 1967, and was worn every day by the original owner, for around 30 years. Then it was retired to the sock drawer. I purchased it from the family of the original owner, in 2016.
We see a few samples of this watch in the community of collectors, most of them having been made in recent years from some loose dials that surfaced. I know of three or four of the original ones, which have unique provenance (if that phrase even makes sense).
Here's the OnTheDash Gallery that shows some of these watches -- http://www.onthedash.com/chronograph/autavia-indianapolis-motor-speedway-logo/
