like you, I am a hesitant seller and I usually give it a lot of thought before I sell. so thinking back, I can't recall any sale that I now regret.
the regrets are all on the "failure to buy" side of the equation. I can think of a few that "got away", which could have been mine for the sake of a few extra dollars or a little better luck on the timing. A Chronomatic "Siffert" and a Chronomatic Monaco come to mind -- one "lost" for the sake of $200, the other lost because I was delayed in checking my e-mail. these were also in my early days of collecting, before I realized the true scarcity of these two pieces.
I should add that there is one piece (shown below) that I sold, then repurchased, but that was initiated by the gentleman who bought it from me, who needed his cash back to fund another purchase. That was lucky for me, as this is one of the rarest ones in my collection.
so in the end, no regrets on the "sell side" of the house.
interesting ideas in your message . . . also interesting (??) that so few of our readers discuss selling . . . the "unspeakable act".

shaun:
: I have found it very hard to sell.
: I always had intention when I buy that I will
: sell something to balance up. But when it
: came to the crunch I could not sell. I knew
: I had the sickness when I bought a second,
: better condition Siffert with the intention
: of selling my first, worse condition one.
: But...but, but then I looked it and it was
: "you know the watch looks really
: different with the different hand styles,
: maybe I should have both..."..very bad
: path to go down.
: End result obviously is stupid amount of
: watches and stupid cash outlay, so in the
: end I did have to sell. Criteria of when to
: sell is always wrist time and also PFW(t).
: Of course, as you all know, PFW(t) is a
: probability density function which is the
: Potential Future Wrist time; you try and
: imagine how your taste could change in the
: future. It is a tricky one.
: Anyone ever sold a watch then really regretted
: it and spend years trying to find a
: replacement?
: Like I was always intending to sell my blue
: Montreal but never found a buyer, then
: somehow my tastes changed and now I have
: four montreals and they are one of my
: favourite models. Pleased I didn't sell. All
: my Camaros have gone.. don't regret it, but
: they are a cool model and not sure what I
: will think next year...or in 5 or 10
: years...?
: Any sob stories out there?
