My theory on the 2 PVD finishes are that on the early watches or "Smooth Finish", these were coated onto brushed or polished cases, which have a good grade surface initially prior to coating.
The more textured finish is caused by the case being Bead Blasted prior to coating. This gives the "Texture" that is visable, also the "Rough" surface provides a better "Key" for the coating to stick too.
Possible answer??
Personally I prefer the "Smooth". I have not found any differance in the performance of either coating method. -Perhaps time will tell!
Best, Gra.
