Monitor Calibration - Worth the Money / Effort ? ?

I was browsing in a CompUSA store today, and thought about about buying a monitor calibration kid. The only kit that they had was the "ColorVision Spyder 2 Pro Studio", priced at $239.00. This version works for both Windows and Mac, but I was put off by (a) the price and (b) the list of features, which seemed a bit "too much".

so here are the questions:

  • how many of you guys have your monitors calibrated?
  • is it worth the expense and effort?
  • are there less expensive approaches / kits?
  • how complicated is this procedure?

It was the recent vacation, and the desire to get some good prints from my digital photos, that made me think about monitor calibration, but I am uncertain about the costs / benefits.

any advice??

Thanks,

Jeff
