Scan Day: I Have Seen the Future, and . . .

I have seen the future, as it looked in the mid-to-late 1950's. There was incredible excitement about the new "self-winding" / automatic technology . . . we had the Gyromatic, Thin-O-Matic, Datomatic, Calendomatic, Kingomatic, Intramatic and the list goes on and on!!

This Futurematic makes the statement that in the future, watches will not need crowns, for winding and setting . . . they will run on their own. The porthole on the left shows the power reserve (so that people could be comfortable trusting these new automatics); the porthole on the right is actually running seconds, so that you can see that the watch is running.

So here it is, from the late 1950's . . . my first two-handed watch. A nice change from the chronographs . . . the gold is pretty, at least when you feel like wearing gold . . . I like the patina!!
