I have been researching this very question for the past couple of months, and my article (in three parts) will be published soon, in International Watch.
Over the years, there has been considerable debate about which was the first automatic chronograph. Contenders are:
- the Heuer-Breitling-Buren (Hamilton) group, which developed the Caliber 12 / Chronomatic
- Zenith (with the El Primero)
- Seiko (with the Reference 6139).
