I have been researching this very question for the past couple of months, and my article (in three parts) will be published soon, in International Watch.
Over the years, there has been considerable debate about which was the first automatic chronograph. Contenders are: I won't hint at my conclusions, but you can click the link below to see Jack Forster's very interesting article that covers this subject.
