Andrew:
Several months ago, I bought three or four books about Fangio -- a couple of old books and a couple of newer, "coffee-table" style books (with lots of photos).
Studying every photograph in these books, it is clear that Fangio often wore chronographs -- both while driving in races and practices and while in his "street clothes". However, I was unable to find any photograph of him wearing anything even remotely resembling the chronographs being sold today as the "Vintage Targa Florio" / "Grand Prix Rallye" chronographs.
Of course, this review cannot be considered defintive -- Heuer says that they supplied him with chronographs for the Targa Florio, and the fact that these are not shown in any of the picture-books that I reviewed is not conclusive. In fact, none of the photographs showed the chronograph that he wore while competing in the Targa Florio, which is what we are really seeking to examine.
We are looking for the proverbial "needle in the haystack", but the search continues . . . Let's keep looking!!
