I believe that Heuer manufactured chronographs for Bulova, which used the same Cal 12 automatic movement as the Heuers. these would be in the category of "poor man's Heuers", as they typically sell at some discount to the Heuers.
Heuer manufactured chronographs for several other brands, as shown on the page linked below. I believe that Bulova belongs in this same category.
In terms of the Monza -- I believe that the sort of transplant that you describe should work. From time to time, you do see cases offered on ebay or other internet sites.
