You are right, Jeff. Watchmaker screwdrivers and pliers are what is required for the job, but it is perhaps a task not for the faint of heart or the novice. I am not aware of the grade of steel used in the C links, that is quite soft and workable, but caution should be exercised to keep the good finish of the parts.

Separately, the bracelet tapers from the case lugs to the fold-over clasp from 20 to 16 mm, so its pieces are not precisely interchangeable in position. If you are shortening a bracelet, do delete the links closer to the clasp. If you are adding links, do it so also close to the clasp, but check they are of the proper width first.
