A bit of F1 racing ephemera. This is a shot from the British GP of 1968, which represented:
a) The first of Jo Siffert's formula one wins (the other was Austria 1971, shortly before his death)
b) the last F1 victory by a privateer car. Siffert was driving a Lotus 49 that was entered by Rob Walker, and was ostensibly similar to the works car driven by Graham Hill.
c) This is one of the first F1 cars with aerodynamic devices. The wings first cropped up at Spa three races earlier, but were quite a bit smaller and lower.
These tall airfoil style wings were banned early in 1969 after the struts collapsed and caused big shunts for both Hill and Heuer-boy Jochen Rindt.
d) NJote the lack of advertising on the car. The factory Lotuses however, wore Gold Leaf livery, instead of british racing green--Colin Chapman was again ahead of the curve. This was the first creep of commericalism into the world of racing, and it was only a short trip from here to Mark Martin's Viagramobile.
