Looking at the box closely again, something else occurs to me that makes me think it might be an early box before the Carrera design was finalised. One of the novelties with the introduction of the Carrera was the internal bezel between the plexiglass and the dial, with markings to show fifths of a second.
That's a good way to check the watch actually - 404s and 3641s don't have this extra ring but all these Carreras (bar the Carrera 12 Dato) should.
The OTD photo below shows the ring quite well - it's an angled bezel fitting between the dial and the glass:
The box image definitely looks not to have one and the watch may not either?
