At first, I am sure it was as much about economics as anything - you have stock X of cases, stock Y of movements and stock Z of literature, so why make any of it redundant by renaming? If the model name leads you to believe you're going to be getting a Cal 11, no-one will complain if they get a Cal 12 with longer power reserve and faster beat movement. The other way round, however....
Where that sensible logic breaks down, though, is in the later models that never would have had a Cal 11 inside - Jaramas and Veronas, for instance, have model numbers beginning 110. Never understood the rhyme and reason behind it - maybe someone in Heuer just said "That's how we've always done it" :)
