Contract Cases

As a relative newbie to Heuer, I am scouting around for a nice vintage watch. I have recently been informed that most watches (including other brands) sold in the U.S. in the period from 1940īs to 1970 (?) were subject to high tarrifs on cases. As a result, contract cases made in the US were fitted with original movements, and hence American vintage watches almost never have signed cases (or crowns?). Can anyone confirm this? I donīt want to buy a lemon!
