I like the look of the stap you currently have in place, i'd leave it if i were you. As i said i'm now cosidering going for a similar colour one myself to contrast the steel/gold combination.
I dont always place original (or original style) straps on my watches. One of my favorite pieces to wear is a blue Montreal with a thick blue alligator strap. Not conventional at all but quite striking in appearance.
