Re: What does football mean to you ?

One thing that puzzles me with American Football and Aussie Rules Football etc is that, and pardon me if I'm wrong, I'm no expert, but, most of the game seems to be carrying the ball in your arms and throwing it. Where's the Foot in that???

Rugby was, from what I can remember at school, developed in the late 1800's in Rugby, England and the joke goes that the shape of the Rugby ball was inspired by the shape of the the lad's head, who broke the rules and ran with the ball, after his team mates had finished duffing him up.

I take it therefore that if you kick the ball with your foot, it is Football. Anything else is Rugby, or Rugby wearing padding, or Rugby for Bee Gee impersonators.

And there endeth my rant. COME ON ENGLAND!!!

: I beleive it comes down to where in the world you grew up.

: Just the same as David C i grew up in Australia, (Melbourne to be
: more specific - the home of Australian Rules Football).
: The meaning of the word football changes through geography. Just as
: someone growing up in UK/Germany/Argentina etc.. refers to
: soccer as football, so do other countries refer to other codes
: when they use the word football - US/Canada thinks grid iron -
: Australia thinks Aussie Rules or Rugby League - New Zealand
: & South Africa think Rugby Union.
: There's just so many choices to choose from.
: In essence the word football is a generic term - what you think of
: when you hear the word depends on what you grew up watching.
: Enjoy your code of football no matter what gentlemen.
: And to Davic C - Go Bombers ;-)

: LETS NOT FORGET - 24 HOUR LE MANS THIS WEEKEND TOO - somehow though
: it just doesn't sound the same in these days of diesel GT cars
: Cheers and a great sporting weekend to all - Darren
