Adding Divers to OnTheDash: Taxonomy (and Other Thoughts)

Guys:

I am very enthusiastic about adding the divers to OnTheDash. Over the years, I have come close to buying a couple of these, but never pulled the trigger. My lack of knowledge was an obstacle; perhaps with more coverage at OnTheDash, I will have the guts to buy one of these beauties. I'm sure that other readers have also had this sense of vertigo, in trying to figure out the divers.

Here are some thoughts for our ad hoc "Divers Committee":

  • The taxonomy of the OnTheDash Index pages and Galleries is critical, and it gets difficult with the watches that have no names on the dial. Please remember that, in large measure, OnTheDash is a visual guide, so that people who find these old watches in the sock drawer can go online and determine what they have. This is relative easy with the Montreals or Monzas, for example, as the name will be on the dial. It's far more difficult for the "no-name" Heuers. Unfortunately, most of the divers do not seem to have distinctive model names.
  • The key question is how many entries we have on the main index page -- http://www.onthedash.com/Guide/_Chronographs/ Should there be one divers watch on this page (or three or seven)? Remember that this is the entry point for many readers (searchers). Imagine that you have found the old watch in the sock drawer, and you go to this page to begin your effort to identify the watch. Do we need to show the reader only one dive watch, or will it be more useful to have more entry points (smiling watch faces)? In other words, if the divers watches are a "family", how many branches are there in the family tree?
  • Of course, from this main Index page, we can go to additional Index pages, and even Index pages below these Index pages. For example, in our Carrera section, the reader may need to click through three or four index pages, before arriving at a Gallery.
  • Once we get all the way down to the Gallery level, it is nice to show multiple samples of the same model. But if we are actually seeing different models or executions, then it may be better to add another Index page, and then put the Galleries at the next level down.
  • It will be ideal if someone on the "Divers Committee" can draw a family tree, starting with either one watch (or maybe three to five [I really have no idea], that would appear on the main index page -- http://www.onthedash.com/Guide/_Chronographs/ -- and then drilling down the branches to get to the lowest display level (the Galleries).
For the record, let me say that there are some sections of OnTheDash where the taxonomy / architecture is good (and some where the organization is easy to achieve), and there are other sections where things are a bit of a mess. It can be very difficult to go in and try to fix the messes, so the good start is critical. If we get the divers section organized properly, it will be much easier to build it out properly.

With all the passion and information about these divers watches, I hope that we can get this organized in the optimal manner, so that readers will enjoy the section(s). I'm very enthusiastic about this . . . and welcome your enthusiasm!! Of course, the exciting moment is when we start loading the galleries with these beauties!!

Jeff

P.S.: Apologies for starting this new thread -- apart from the Heuerville thread -- but it may be more manageable to have this taxonomy / architecture discussion in a separate thread.
