An AU$2000 should be able to get you a pretty decent Heuer; it's just a case of finding the right one for you. It won't stretch to a Monaco or a Silverstone, but it probably doesn't exclude the majority of the other named series, if you look hard enough - the commoner Autavias are probably still just in that budget, manual second generation Carreras and perhaps the 1153 too. If you wanted to go a bit more vintage, then Camaro prices haven't reached their peak and can be had for that and less. Some of the lesser known named series are within reach too, but harder to find - Verona, Jarama perhaps. And Pasadenas as suggested for sure, and maybe Kentuckies too - I think the Kentuckies are still something of a "secret" and are probably due their moment in the sun at some point. Get one of those two and if you're lucky you might still have enough for a Temporada too! Divers seem to be quite the in thing at the moment and lots of those are coming out of the woodwork recently.
It probably makes the search a bit easier if you find a Heuer or two in that price range that speaks to you, and then focus on those. Otherwise you might end up chasing your tail a bit - that, or blowing your budget several times over!
And there are lots of people on here who can comment on the authenticity of a watch for you, if you do find one off plan you're not sure on, plus a couple of Australian residents who may be able to recommend dealers.
Lastly, good luck in the search and I look forward to that "My new arrival" post :)
