This reminds me of a similar occurence here in Atlanta a few years ago, with a pending auction of some of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's most important papers. This controversy involved the family, the City of Atlanta, and the auction house. In the end, I believe that the City put together a group to buy the papers, before the auction was held.
