When people ask me why I collect watches, one of my regular responses is that they are easier to sneak into the house than cars. The package arrives at my office, and the new acquisition arrives at home in a pocket, in my briefcase or even on my wrist.

After years of hoping that my wife would share my enthusiasm for these amazing old watches, I have come to realize that -- try as she might -- she just doesn't appreciate them. I remember wearing my newly acquired Rolex Explorer for a solid week, and then showing my wife the watch. Her reaction, "It just looks like a black watch." At that point, I realized that it was hopeless.

So while my wife is supportive of this hobby, in very general terms, I have given up on hoping that she will admire or appreciate any specific watch . . . black PVD Monaco, first execution Autavia, poly-back Carrera, "Chronomatic" on top . . . they are all "just watches". Accordingly, there is little benefit (and considerable risk) in sharing the experience of the new arrival.
