Re: AMI Leonidas
In Response To: AMI Leonidas ()

Some misinformation in that listing.

Forgive me if this is generally known here, but here goes...
The watch listed is not the direct ancestor of the Heuer Bundeswehr, as the seller implies, but rather the smaller cousin of that ancestor

Italian military chronographs of the 60s and early 70s come in 2 specs, CP-1 and CP-2 (CP for cronometro di polso).
The CP-1 was the smaller of the two, and watches to CP-1 spec were produced by Breitling (ref 817, with a Valjoux 236) and Leonidas, with a Valjoux 222. The watch offered is the latter. Neither was ordered through or by Cairelli. The Breitling was issued to Army aviation, whereas teh Leonidas was for the Air Force (Aeoronautica MIlitare Italiana = AMI).
The CP-2 was the larger, and watches to CP-2 spec were produced by Universal Geneve (cal UG 265P) and then by Zenith, after Zenith bought Martel which was the source of the UG caliber (renamed Zenith cal 146 DP), and also by Leonidas, again with a Valjoux 222. Both the UG and the Zenith were supplied through Cairelli, although when collectors talk about a 'Cairelli' they are usually speaking about the Zenith. Curiously neither had a flyback. The Leonidas was not supplied by Cairelli, and was for all intents and purposes the direct parent of the Bundeswehr. It appears to have been supplied to Italian Army aviation, whereas the UG and the Zenith were more broadly distributed, including Air Force, police and Interior Ministry forces.

This is a Leonidas CP-2, with a Zenith CP-2 below.

If i'm wrong about any of the above, or if anyone knows more or different, please chime in.
