End links - why so ill fitting?

(Mainly on Autavias) - I've seen so many Heuer end links that are 'correct' to the watch, but are ill fitting, ie. the height of the endlink isn't quite high enough.

I've also noticed the wear marks on many Autavias that I own/have owned & in others photographs, that give away these 'low fitting' end links. Why is this?
