With two speedlights, you have enough light to blot out the sun. So by all means you can handhold and get crisp results. The trick is to diffuse it enough.
I have had some good success with a pair of speedlights firing through a diffusing umbrella. You can also try bouncing the flash off the ceiling but that may require the tripod due to lost light.
Take whatever approach works for you and experiment with only one variable at a time.
Another thing you may want to look at is shooting in camera RAW as opposed to jpeg.
This will allow you much more flexibility in post processing.
Keep shooting and keep posting, especially if it has chronomatic on the dial.
