Thanks Lou, that was useful reading.
I'm not sure the cases are that marmite, love it or loathe it - the A386 resonates with me instantly as a classic case, what you refer to as the angled tonneau case intrigues me and I think I'd need to see and handle one in the metal to really get it; it's only the slab case that really leaves me cold at first glance. Not dissimilar to my initial reactions to the cases of the first, second and third generation Carreras in fact.
Though not my favourite case of the 3, there's some nice dial work going on with the tonneau case - the blue as in David's example, and the smoke fade of the A385 stand out for me. I like the red dialled Espada (A781?) too, but the heavy, exaggerated markers detract a lot on that dial for me. The turquoisey 782 too, but that has the same "problem" with the markers.
Might have to pick up that Manfred Rössler book - I'll definitely pay more attention to the Zeniths at my next watch fair, rather than thinking the A386 is the alpha and omega and it all ends there! I really liked that G381 you posted a pic of a while back too:
Presumably it's considered profane to snap up nice examples of the tonneaus and recase them in A386 cases?! Don't worry, just kidding :)
