Agree Mark- then again, the whole sport looks crazy to me (even though F1 looks totally rational!)
It really was a shocking, shocking accident. When you saw Senna crash in 94, most people would have expected him to walk out unharmed. This one was that bad that you knew as soon as you saw it that it was very, very serious.
If you haven't see it, take a look on Youtube for "Formula 1: The Killer Years", which shows the abysmal saefty standards that F1 had in the 1960s and 70s and the brave efforts of people like Jackie Stewart to get safety on the agenda. Stewart used to race with a spanner taped to his steering wheel so that a rescuer could unscrew the steering wheel and get him out of the burning wreckage if possible.
Its come a long way, but very sad to see incidents like today- very lucky that there wasn't more than one driver killed.
