Sunday, October 24, 1971, exactly 40 years ago, died at Brands Hatch, Jo Siffert.
He was one of the greats of his era, one of the most eclectic drivers, one of the ones that best embodies the essence of the romantic hero of motorsport.
At a time when the toll of lives in F1, and in motorsport in general, was very heavy, those who decided to take that career was aware that he risked death every time you put behind a wheel of a ' Car dangerous, dangerous on a track ... In those days there were no escape routes, maintenance of the cars was what it was and Jo died inexplicably lost control of his car in the middle of a straight line, perhaps to a fault to the suspension.
It was great for his driving style, for his love of life that destiny and trying at all costs.
Did the mechanic, the florist, the seller of used occasionally to markets in order to scrape together some money to buy a race car. In formula defeated several times larger samples, but it was the best on the Sports Prototype, in endurance racing in the days that were far more important than the F1.
His opponent was the equally tough Pedro Rodriguez.
Among the many works Heuer ambassador Jo was on the slopes, as well as the seller of watches. He had a particular passion for chronographs and, often, he was to sell the watches to his colleagues, even those who were not to round off the salaries of the "axis" of flying today.
As far as Graham Hill, Rindt, Clark and the whole F1 circus had a Heuer. Jo If they catch you with another clock, had trouble.
And they all conformed ... Even Steve McQueen, his great friend, he found a Heuer wrist in exchange for consulting on the film by Jo Le Mans!
His watch was quell'Heuer Autavia with white dial and blue trim, after his death, was never revived despite huge initial success of sales. Perhaps in deference to a great friend, Jack Heuer did not reiterate more quell'abbinamento sull'Autavia of colors in the years to come.
We all remember it well ...
