A Conversation with a Dealer (re a Serial Number)

Jeff: Yes, I am calling with a couple of questions about an Autavia that you have listed for sale.

Dealer: OK, well I will be happy to help.

Jeff: Can you please tell me the serial number of the watch, marked between the lugs?

Dealer: I'm sorry, we do not give out serial numbers prior to a sale. We can send you the number, after you have paid for the watch. Could I ask why you are asking for this information?

Jeff: To be able to authenticate the watch. Some elements appear to be questionable, and the serial number will allow me to get more comfortable with the watch. Could I please ask why you have this policy?

Dealer: To protect the original purchaser of the watch.

Jeff: But this watch is from the late 1960s. The original purchaser is most likely either dead or no longer needs this sort of protection.

Dealer: I'm sorry . . . that is our policy and we do not allow exceptions.

Jeff: Good luck selling the watch.
