: A bit like the people who say that Boxsters are for people
: who can't afford a 911, and that they are rubbish. Yet, they
: wouldn't say that if they had driven one.
But why rag on the girl car for people who can't afford 911s when the stupid overweight SUV with the "OMG, they didn't!!!" styling is a much easier and more tempting target?!! Cars are even more polarising than watches and there are plenty of opinions and prejudices out there with them too. And the people who can look beyond those prejudices are thin on the ground too.
Though I would confess I would take the Cayman over the Boxster. I would have plenty of rational reasons; closed car is stiffer to the benefit of handling, my natural sun protection in the form of hair is sadly no longer sufficient for the open car, but the looks would be part of the equation too. And Shaun mentioned the ubiquity of Rolexes, I think that's a bit of a demerit for the Boxster too.
Whereas the Cayman is more like a modern 914. Actually, I think I'd rather have a 914/6 than either of the current mid-engined cars. Vintage wins again!
I reckon the current sweet spot in the Porsche range is the 911 GT3. Not an RS, there you start paying for fripperies, just the plain GT3. Just stripped back enough, engine not as mental as a GT2's, price not too outlandish, no stupid stickers to request removing. Though I don't think you can buy a base GT3 any more, more's the pity. So maybe that should be recent sweet spot, rather than current...
