What a great topic.
My issue with Rolex is its status as the defacto standard nice watch. Money aside I can come up with a list of a few dozen watches Heuer and non Heuer alike that I would own before dipping into the world of Rolex and no I would still not pick new.
As with any topic, watches, cars, golf, when we learn more we always obsess over the smaller details. With a deeper collector pool, the Rolex guys need more to talk about and hence the Bart Simpson crown.
We are lucky following a brand that had serious visual distinction between its models and a History that is in large part being rediscovered by the folks here on OTD.
Not likely to confuse the Silverstone for the Dato 12 any time soon, but make no mistake when someone brings out a Heuer which is only differentiated by the word chronomatic we all have a collective nerd-gasam.
Yes one day I will have a Rolex, but if I could own only one watch I would pick Heuer any day any time.
Cheers
Rob
