If not, I'd suggest one of the divers watches. Tough and durable, serious watches but with dials from subtle (black), through intriguing (full lume) to loud (orange). At his age, he'd probably want a full size one but they are available in mid-size too.
Durable watches, but plenty of scope in the range to be the basis of a collection too if the bug bites! Check out some of Stewart's posts here, his photos make the watches look very appealing.
