To try and answer some of your and my questions,
not necessarily a chronograph but it would be nice
a diver style watch would I'm sure go down well (no pun intended)
budget would need to be in the hundreds as opposed to thousands, something that if it were damaged wouldnt be a tragedy but at the same time something that would encourage him to look after it with a view to progressing and hopefully collecting for himself.
