Maybe it Depends on Whether Papers Tell a Story?
In Response To: Interesting ()

Interesting topic for discussion.

Generally, there seems to be a lot less of the "Full Set" hysteria in the vintage Heuer world, compared with, say, the vintage Heuer world.

To me, the value of papers depends on the story that they tell. Papers showing that the Monaco is still in the hands of the original purchaser, or papers showing how the soldier bought this watch in 1946, are very interesting. But the routine papers showing the serial number and date of a Viceroy purchase, and which have been passed from owner to owner, along with the watch, probably add a lot less to the value of the package.

Then there are the folks who are assembling the "Full Sets", by combining the elements, long after the fact. Value added there would be zero, in my humble opinion.

: Carl,

: First, I think that if half of your vintage watches have papers you
: are in the top few percent of collectors. Second, I think you
: hit on a very interesting point and I agree with you completely.
: The watch is more important than the papers. Some collectors
: think about value more than others but we are all buying the
: watches. I would much rather have a really nice original watch
: than a sub-standard watch with its original papers.
