I believe that Porsche used the "Carrera" name first, for some of its racing models . . . Then came Heuer, in 1963.
Of course, both these references go back to the Mexican road race, La Carrera Panamericana -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrera_Panamericana. The race was run from 1950-54, then cancelled because of the number of fatalities, as well as the Le Mans disaster of 1955.
