...related to it, this was the case of Radium Girls, in a time with absolutely no industrial regulation. An estimated 4,000 female workers were hired by corporations in the U.S. and Canada to paint watch faces with radium.

That is the most extreme case ever. (and some good came out of this dark chapter, as workplace safety laws came into existence as a result.)
