Racing Photo

Late in 2012 I was lucky enough to be chosen to be part of the creative team which would make the first photographic image to grace the cover of the program for the Indianapolis 500 mile race in its 100 year history. The powers that be wanted to feature all of the living 4 time and 3 time winners of the race on a fold out cover. We planned and met and planned some more and finally the logistical coordinator for the project was able to get all 4 of the 3 time winners into the IndyCar studio on 16th Street in Indianapolis on November 15 and all 3 of the 4 time winners down to A. J. Foyt's shop in Waller, Texas on November 29.

The shoot in our beautiful studio in Indy was easy but for the shoot at AJ's shop I had to fly all of my lights down and rent a bunch of other studio equipment in Houston. We had a canceled flight on the way down but still managed to get a studio set up at AJ's and light pretty closely to the way we did it in Indy by the time AJ, Rick and Al showed up. Then all of the racing stories started flying around. We managed to get the pictures shot but we missed our flight back to Indy because we simply couldn't tear ourselves away from the conversation which was going on between the drivers and a few of AJ's long time mechanics and crew.

During the shoots I got all of the drivers to autograph the reflectors from the lights used to make the backdrop burn out behind them. I had to buy a couple of new reflectors but it was worth it. The reflectors are shown below on the poster made from the cover shot. Actually it is 3 shots merged together by the wizards in the creative department at the Speedway. The 4 time winners side is one shot and the 3 time winners side is two shots with Dario and Bobby in one shot and Helio and Johnny in another.

I don't know when I have ever had so much fun shooting photos and I have shot quite a few photos. The program features a multi-page story about the photo shoot complete with candid pictures.
