Re: Re Lot 91: Is It the 1158 CH (First Version)?

Jeff,

this is my 1158S, serial 1742x9, just 10 watches far from the one auctioned, that seems all right to me in every particular.

1742xx has been the second batch of 100 watches produced of the 1158, there should be an other (the very first) batch of 100 watches with Chronomatic dial an polished hands, we have seen just the dials from that watches as most should have been melted. The 1742xx cases feature the gold hallmark behind one lug and the serial/reference in recessed position respect the 'usual' later cases.

The earlier 1742xx watches have the dial without onyx, single stripe markers, single stripe polished hands, while the late 1742xx have the configuration like the one auctioned (double stripe on hands and markers, onyx at 12).

Here is one early 1742xx, the earliest 1158 we know, sold on ebay some years ago and now in Switzerland (these 3 1742xx we are talking are the earliest 1158 we know today)

Obviously it's a fact that the 1158 Carrera has been produced in many batches of 100, then 200 or 300 watches, and the total production is for sure more than 1000 watches.

: Before we jump to the conclusion that this one is over-priced,
: let's all agree on what it is.

: Is this the first version of the 1158 CH, which we have not yet
: seen (or perhaps we have seen it, but it's not in my files)? The
: 174289 is a very low serial number . . . one of the two or three
: lowest that we have seen. Then these is the 3-6-9-12 on the hour
: recorder. Catalog shows this one with the earlier hands, but we
: all know about those catalogs.

: Any other views about this watch?

: Jeff
