Interesting How Watch Size Has Crept Up to 42mm Standard

Peter:

Your photo of the old and the new highlights how 42mm seems to have become the new "standard" for a moderate sized watch. Here is what Hodinkee wrote, in its review of the Striking Tenth:

The 42mm case sit well on my wrist and though I tend to trend towards 40mm and smaller cases, I saw no problem with the slightly larger diameter. 42mm is, to me, the happy median of today between the vintage nuts like myself who want sub 40mm cases and the average luxury watch buy who may want something at 44mm+. In my perfect world, I would love a Striking Tenth at 40mm, or better yet, a Striking Tenth in the 38mm El Primero case. Will that happen? Zenith says it has no plans for such a model, but that's OK, because for this watch, a 42mm case is just fine.

Below is an image that shows the "size creep" that we have seen in the Heuers, from the 1960s, to 2004, to 2013 (43 mm on the Calibre 36 Flyback).

: Hi Jeff

: I am a happy owner of a Zenith Striking 10'th.

: Love measuring events to 1/10 of a second looking at the second
: hand racing around the dial.

: It is a beautiful watch - on the negative side I think that the
: date should be between 4 and 5 and that the subdials are to
: close to the center of the dial, but of cause that is dictated
: by the movement. Must admit that the original A386 is a better
: looking watch.
